Chapter 14

Skylar drove while I sat in the passenger seat, crystal ball in my lap. Mads sat in the back, keeping an eye on things.

“Weather’s being strange,” she commented as we drove through town. “Just a second ago it was sunny. Now it looks like we’re about to get a thunderstorm.”

I could feel her apprehension, but the weight of my scrying spell kept me focused on the task at hand. The harder I looked for Corey specifically, the more pushback I received. It was the same feeling I got when I looked into him the first time. This cold, dark wall that I couldn’t break past. The only reason I knew we were getting closer was because with every inch we drew near, the harder this wall railed back.

“Take a left here,” I told Skylar. I was getting awfully cold. It was like my insides were freezing up. “I have a feeling he’s around here somewhere.”

She was just about to turn at the four-way stop when the unthinkable happened. A massive bolt of lighting shot down from the sky and zapped the concrete in front of us. It charred the road, smoke wafting up where the lightning singed the earth. All three of us screamed at the top of our lungs, frightened within an inch of our lives.

“Keep going!” I said. “We’re so close!”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Mads screeched from the backseat.

“Go, Skylar!”

She slammed her foot down on the gas pedal and we ripped away, tires screaming behind us as we raced forward. We didn’t get very far before the weather started pelting us with heavy, golf ball-sized hail. It pelted her car with a fury, denting the hood, the roof, and threatening to crack the windshield.

“What is happening?” Skylar gasped.

All of a sudden, a nearby tree came tumbling down. It fell with a loud crash right in front of us, blocking our path. My heart was in my throat, a loud ringing in my ears as the crystal ball in my lap grew hotter than the sun. I had to let go or else it’d burn right through my hands, cutting off my scrying spell as a result. It didn’t matter, though, because I took a quick glance out of my window and saw Corey standing just above the hill overlooking the local park.

I got out of the car in a hurry, racing toward him. “Hey!”

Corey whipped around, startled. He’d been on the phone and promptly hung up. Over the hill, I could see the local community garden. Seated by a familiar looking planter box full of blooming red roses was Lily, who was staring at her phone with a confused expression.

“What are you doing here?” Corey asked.

Now that I was no longer using my scrying spell to pry, the effects of his curse lessened, though I could still feel an icky grossness crawling across my skin. “You need to tell me what’s going on,” I demanded.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Yes, you do. Tell me about your curse.
